I'm assuming none of you guys can make a suggestion since, as I said, I don't think any of you have a Wii.
National Women’s History Museum
Sep. 29th, 2010 06:56 pmTo be honest, it kind of makes me sad that there’s even a need for a national women’s history museum. However, since women’s history is largely overlooked in favor of white male history, I think it’s important that there be a museum that acknowledges the contributions of women.

Aug. 23rd, 2010 07:19 pmHave I mentioned that I hate the whole dTV thing? Yes, I realize that in theory this was supposed to make our TV service better. In practice, however, that isn’t what happened, at least in my case. I don’t have cable, nor do I have a fancy TV. In fact, my TV is several years old and not a flat screen type thing. So when the dTV change happened, I had to get one of those converter boxes and I now get even fewer channels then I did before.
I suppose this is no biggie, since I seem to have a hard time remembering when a show I want to watch airs (for example, it’s not unheard of for me to realize at 9:00 one night “oh shit, such and such a show was on at 8!”) and I end up waiting for it to come out on DVD anyway.
That’s kinda what happened in the case of Pushing Daises: I watched some episodes while the show was still being aired on TV, but some weeks totally forgot to watch it until after that week’s episode was over. I thus found myself renting the DVD so I could watch what I missed.
Some thoughts:
- Kristin Chenoweth is adorable.
- If you watch the bonus features for season 2, Bryan Fuller mentions that the coloring (?) was influenced by the French movie Amelie, which I thought was funny because before I watched those bonus features, I found myself thinking “hey, the colors remind me so much of Amelie!”
- Oh, and there were some plot things I thought were confusing/didn’t make sense/plot holes/whatever. I’m putting them behind a cut as not to spoil something for someone.
( SPOILERS AHEAD! )

Aug. 19th, 2010 07:37 pm- dreamwidth.haphazardry.net now forwards to my my dreamwidth.
- livejournal.haphazardry.net now forwards to my livejournal.
Does anyone but me care about this? Probably not. But I wanted to share.
Yes, haphazarblog has basically become a twitter archive. I suspect, however, that I’m pretty much the only person who really wants the tweet posts here. I’m presently working on moving all my tweet posts to their own seperate category; this category will not appear on feeds or on the main part of the site. This is a really tedious process, however, and I probably won’t finish the whole thing today.
So I find myself trying to make some decisions about this blog. Obviously, I still have both my LJ and DW; neither are going anywhere. I had mainly kept this around with the thought that I would use it to keep in touch with family when I move, but whether or not I actually end up moving is still very much up in the air. Since I just paid for two years worth of hosting earlier this summer, I’m not going to just get rid of this space. Here’s what I see my options as being:
- Keep using this blog as a general life blog, and cross post as needed.
Pros- I can put a password on posts I don’t want available to the general public.
- I can give the people in my life who don’t have LJ or DW accounts a way to keep up with me.
- Cross-posting isn’t that difficult – now that it’s set up, I don’t really have to do anything.
Cons
- Is it really necessary to have three blogs/journals that essentially say the same thing out there? Are there really that many people out there that care about my life? (I’m guessing probably not)
- Use this space for a more specialized purpose.
Pros- I’ve been thinking about doing some sort of challenge of some kind and blogging about my progress here. It might be fun.
- This would give the blog a more specific purpose separate from my LJ and DW.
Cons
- I have no idea what sort of challenges I would like to document here.
- If my past experiences with the 101 things in 1001 days thing is any indication, I suck at keeping up with a challenge for any length of time.
- Set this domain to forward to either my LJ or DW.
Pros- I like the name and I want to keep using it in some capacity and since I have paid accounts on both LJ and DW, why not?
- The hosting space I’ve already paid for is also being used for things like snailed.net, so it’s not like the money will completely go to waste.
Cons
- If I forward this domain name to one of my journals, I will probably feel like I’d have to buy a 2nd domain name to forward to the other, which will involve more money, albeit not much.
- Even if the hosting space is being put to use, there’s a good chance I’ll feel like I’m not using it to it’s maximum potential, and thus wasting money.
Have you been in a similar situation? What have you done? I’d love to hear your personal experiences and opinions.

Aug. 15th, 2010 05:26 pmI realize this is mostly very late in the game; I really meant to post this stuff a long time ago but that didn’t work out. Whoops. I apologize to those of you for whom this is all old news.
- Not only is Iceland’s Prime Minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir, the first openly gay world leader, but she married her parnter, Jonina Leosdottir.
- If the above isn’t reason enough to think Iceland is totally aweseome and worth visiting, the Icelandic Tourist Board launched this really cute tourist inititive called Iceland Wants to be Your Friend.
- And in other unrelated linkage, have you guys seen The Seventeen Magazine Project? Essentially, this teenager decided to spend a month living by the sugestions in Seventeen Magazine and blogging about the experience. I realize the month she spent doing this is long over, but I thought it was worth the plug: this girl sounds very smart and self-aware and I really think she deserves a high-five, or something.
conversations with dead people
Aug. 9th, 2010 01:39 pmAs I’ve mentioned multiple times now, I’ve been watching old TV shows on DVD. I guess the term “old” is relative; I’m mostly watching shows from the 1990s and early 2000s, which I guess isn’t old in the grand scheme of things, but in any case, I’ve been making a point of watching shows that are no longer on the air.
I recently finished watching Wonderfalls. If you’ve never seen the show, the basic premise is that this under-achieving, college educated 20-something who works retail starts having inanimate speak to her and instruct her to help people. What’s kind of funny is that Jewel Staite guest starred on several episodes, and I spent every episode she was on staring at her wondering why she looked so familier. It wasn’t until I looked her up on imdb that I realized she looked familier because I’d seen her on Firefly.
After finishing Wonderfalls, I started on Tru Calling, which I’ve already talked some about and am still working on watching. Up next? Pushing Daises. Yes, I’ve managed to go from watching a show in which the main character talks to inanimate objects to a show in which the main character talks to dead people to a show in which the main character can bring dead people back to life long enough to solve the mystery surround their death. No, I didn’t plan it this way. Yes, I can see how my propensity for TV shows of this nature is perhaps morbid. Besides the unlikely communication between living people and things that normally wouldn’t be able to talk (inanimate objects + corpses), the one thing all three shows have in common is that that main character begins to help people due to this unlikely communication.
